Company: Verizon Media
Location: Basking Ridge

Job Description:

When you join Verizon

Verizon is one of the world's leading providers of technology and communications services, transforming the way we connect across the globe. We're a diverse network of people driven by our shared ambition to shape a better future. Here, we have the ability to learn and grow at the speed of technology, and the space to create within every role. Together, we are moving the world forward - and you can too. Dream it. Build it. Do it here.

What you'll be doing...

The Open Source Program Office is seeking for a Principal Engineer / Open Source Data Architect to play a critical role that interacts with development teams across the company with the goal of driving the analysis and tracking of open source component use. You will engage with teams across the enterprise to standardize, connect, and harmonize the existing approaches for tracking open source components and drive the development and implementation of meaningful metrics. You will work closely with your peers in the Open Source Program Office who are driving the secure supply chain and component viability efforts, focused on tooling, tracking, and metrics. You will be responsible for the overall prioritization of efforts regarding the full breadth of components in use across Verizon, including understanding, documenting, and highlighting the necessary trade-offs and proposing effective solutions to improve the security and compliance of our open source environments.

You will be part of a cross-group virtual team focused on engineering innovative, strategic, and long-term solutions that align with (and often expand) Verizon enterprise architecture standards. You will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to establish and maintain technical leadership within the enterprise technology teams. You will also work closely with your peers on implementing policies and establishing best practices for the use of open source software components in all stages of the development lifecycle.

Additionally, you will mentor and coach engineers at all levels across the organization to better understand the existing industry standard processes and policies around open source use.

  • Analyzing the various efforts on open source component tracking across the enterprise.
  • Acting as the driving force behind the harmonization and integration of those efforts.
  • Ensuring complete coverage across all parts of the business, focusing on prioritizing the target efforts appropriately.
  • Maintaining and promoting best practices around use of and contribution to third party open source projects.
  • Identifying key components and processes to improve the overall maintainability, security, and compliance of the Verizon open source supply chain.
  • Providing mentorship and coaching in order to establish best practices for component maintainability and upgradability.
  • Working as part of a broader effort to establish and review viability criteria for open source components (based on the OpenSSF framework, among others).
  • Working with the OSPO leadership on the overall open source related strategies. Where you'll be working...

This is a work-from-home role performed almost exclusively from your home office with occasional in-person meetings and training.

    What we're looking for...

    You'll need to have:
    • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
    • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
    • Experience in data science, analytics, and common tools in this field.
    • Experience in engaging with and contributing to open source projects.
    • Experience in doing code review and giving constructive feedback to other developers.
    • Experience in developing metrics out of data from a variety of backend services. Even better if you have one or more of the following:
      • Bachelor's / Masters' degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
      • Experience in giving or participating in public presentations and participation in open source events.
      • Experience in working on use of open source components in enterprise environments.
      • Experience in software development practices in one or more programming languages.
      • Experience in working databases, REST APIs, and similar automated data services.
      • Experience in working with workflow solutions like ServiceNow, Jira, or similar.
      • Experience in Python or other tooling languages.
      • Experience in working with open source security (and software security in general).
      • Experience in articulating the business drives and architectural approach/trade-offs during discussions for solution.
      • Experience in facilitating group meetings/discussions.
If Verizon and this role sound like a fit for you, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every "even better" qualification listed above.
