Work
on-campus as the Center for Pre-College Program (CPCP) MSI Summer
Coordinator
for the NJIT/Newark Math Success Initiative (MSI) - a 6-week summer
offering
which is implemented through the Center for Pre-College Programs
(student
component) and the Department of Mathematical Sciences (teacher
component) at
NJIT! The MSI program is designed to identify and strengthen Newark
high
school students' mathematics knowledge, skills, and preparation of
college
work. Program participants are rising-12th graders from five public
high
schools within the Newark school district. The CPCP MSI Summer
Coordinator
works collaboratively with the project team to oversee the student
component
of the MSI project and ensures the efficient day-to-day operations
of the
learning experiences for a group of up to 50 high school students
during the
virtual program implementation. Provides support to the classroom
instructors
in activities related to students' academic development and
enrichment in an
NJIT mathematics enrichment course plus additional classes in
SAT/ACT
preparation, real-world mathematics applications, career
exploration, and
college preparatory/readiness skills development. Employment and/or
continued
employment are subject to successfully passing State Mandated
Criminal
Background Check. There is one (1) CPCP MSI Summer Coordinator
position
available.
Position Dates: June 1 - August 19, 2022 (Mondays - Thursdays from
9:00 am - 4:00 pm until June 30, 2022 then 8:00 am - 3:30 pm until
August 12, 2022 during program implementation; Fridays from 9:00 am
- 4:00 pm).
Program Dates: July 5 - August 12, 2022 (Mondays - Thursdays from
8:30 am - 3:00 pm) plus staff trainings, student testing, student
and parent orientation, setup, and wrap-up days before and after
the program implementation which includes several half-days on
Saturdays in June and Closing Ceremony on Friday, August 12,
2022.
Essential Functions:
- Evaluates and monitors students' behavior including the
supervision of
students during recreation.
- Ensures project instructors complete an evaluation of students'
classroom
assignments, final projects, and test results.
- Oversees the Teaching Assistant staff for the project.
- Counsels and serves as a mentor students in the project, with a
professional
emphasis on building positive bonds while remaining sensitive to
any and all
difficulties they may have.
- Maintains a line of communications between MSI Project staff in
CPCP and
Department of Mathematics Sciences to ensure efficient daily
operations of
the program regarding student learning experiences and oversight of
Teaching
Assistants.
- Assist in the recordkeeping of program implementation including
student
evaluation, data collection and performance documentation.
- Assists in the administration and evaluation of assessment
instruments.
- Assists in leading a healthy social and psychological learning
environment
that will facilitate student's desire to learn and help the
development of
cognitive, and affective and psychosocial skills such as
self-efficacy,
self-advocacy, goal setting, time management, etc.
- Attends all staff development and training sessions.
- Serves as an informal mentor through leading by example to
provide support
and assistance to students and staff as encouragement for college
readiness,
particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM).
- Assists in conducting sessions on challenge time, 21st century
life skills,
college preparatory and readiness skills development, education
planning, and
SAT/ACT, when necessary.
- Leads the supervision of recreation experiences each week.
- Accompanies participants on field trips and other activities
related to the
program, when appropriate.
Additional Functions:
The
CPCP MSI Summer Coordinator is required to attend all general
meetings with
program directors and staff, training sessions, parent/student
mandatory
orientation, and closing ceremony.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Applicants
must have a bachelor's degree in education, school counseling, or a
science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field. Preferably
candidates
should possess a master's degree or relevant experience with at
least 3-5
years of experience in the management of pre-college learning
experiences.
- Applicants must be available for mandatory training starting
mid-to-end of
June 2022 and be available to work the duration of the face-to-face
summer
program through August 19, 2022 or using virtual platforms such as
WebEx and
Google Classroom for Education, when necessary.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience
prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate
to the
satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of
education and
experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the
position.
