Position Summary:
Work on-campus as the Center for Pre-College Program (CPCP) MSI
Academic Coordinator for the NJIT/Newark Math Success Initiative
(MSI) - the academic year component held during the fall and spring
semesters (15 weeks per semester) which is implemented through the
Center for Pre-College Programs (student component) and the
Department of Mathematical Sciences (teacher component) at NJIT!
The MSI program is designed to identify and strengthen Newark high
school students' mathematics knowledge, skills, and preparation of
college work. Program participants are 12th graders from five
public high schools within the Newark school district. The CPCP MSI
Academic Coordinator works collaboratively with the CPCP project
team to support the student component of the MSI project. The
Academic Coordinator ensures the efficient day-to-day monitoring of
the learning and academic progress for individual and small groups
of up to 50 MSI high school students during the program
implementation through mathematics academic support and tutoring
services. Provides academic support related to the mathematics
instruction, homework problems, and quizzes/tests/exam study skills
necessary for success in Math 110/Math 111 coursework plus SAT/ACT
test preparation, career exploration, and college
preparatory/readiness skills development or assignments for College
Prep classes. Employment and/or continued employment are subject to
successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check.
There is one (1) CPCP MSI Academic Coordinator position
available.
Essential Functions:
- Evaluates and monitors students' behaviors, skills and knowledge
for academic success especially in mathematics necessary for
college success.
- Ensures effective lines of communications between the Director of
Special Projects, MSI project team, and MSI students as documents
through the students' meetings, classroom assignments, projects,
and test results.
- Counsels and serves as a mentor to students in the project, with
a professional emphasis on building positive bonds while remaining
sensitive to any and all difficulties they may have.
- Assist in the recordkeeping of student's academic progress during
the program implementation including student evaluation, data
collection and performance documentation.
- Assists in the administration and evaluation of assessment
instruments.
- Assists in leading a healthy social and psychological learning
environment that will facilitate student's desire to learn and help
the development of cognitive, and affective and psychosocial skills
such as self-efficacy, self-advocacy, goal setting, time management
etc.
- Attends all staff development and training sessions. Serves as an
informal mentor through leading by example to provide support and
assistance to students and staff as encouragement for college
readiness, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM).
- Assists in conducting sessions on mathematics skills development,
college preparatory an readiness skills development, support
education planning (from College Prep classes), and SAT/ACT, when
necessary.
- Accompanies participants on field trips and other activities
related to the program, when appropriate.
Additional Functions:
- The CPCP MSI Academic Coordinator is required to attend all
general meetings with program directors and staff, training
sessions, parent/student mandatory orientation, and closing
ceremony.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in education, school
counseling, or a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) field.
- Preferably candidates should possess a master's degree or
relevant experience with at least 3-5 years of experience in the
management of pre-college learning experiences.
- Applicants must be available for mandatory training prior to
starting the position at the beginning of the academic year, for
example September 2022, and be available to work the duration of
the academic year from September 2022 through June 2023 for
face-to-face academic support or using virtual platforms such as
WebEx and Google Classroom for Education, when necessary.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience
prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate
to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of
education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for
success in the position.
