Rising Scholars is a mentorship program, coupled with an
on-campus work opportunity giving preference to incoming Newark
residents. Rising Scholars will be paired with a mentor who will
provide guidance on academic skills and college success. Mentoring
will consist of 1-1 weekly meetings, tutoring, workshops and
academic programs to enrich freshman year accllimation and ensure
campus resources are known and utilized.
The Rising Scholars Program will follow these guidelines: The
weekly student commitment will be a total of 15 hours per week 10
hours per week for work 5 hours per week for mentoring activities
Mentoring activities consist of homework time, tutoring and/or 1-1
counseling. Students will be asked to regularly attend programming
that helps one adjust to college life. The programming will count
toward the mentoring required hours. A small budget of $20,000 will
be provided for mentors to use positive reinforcements such as
greeting cards of encouragement and a gift card to reward success
and milestone achievements. Students will be paid $11 per hour for
15 hours per week from the allotted work study monies.
