Position Description

The Safety Manager – Forestry monitors and participates in safety and training related activities of (a) forestry work crews engaged in multi-state and large project vegetation management on utility operations including but not limited to electric power lines, electric facilities and pipeline operations, or (b) work crews engaged in multi-state and large project power line construction operations, or (c) persons engaged in chemical blending and packing operations or (d) persons working in administrative or shop locations, or (e) any combination of the above, but with a primary emphasis in forestry work crews.

Responsibilities

Duties Include

Essential Functions:

Accountable for the operational safety results of assigned geographic region

Assists in the development and/or implementation of a continuous program of safety education and inspection

Works with field supervision and the Safety and Training Department to investigate personal injury, vehicle, and property accidents, assisting with the filing of accident reports, and compiling accident statistics

Schedules weekly crew visits for the purpose of giving safety related guidance, assistance and support

Assures crew compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations regarding health and safety

Conducts periodic inspections of work sites and vehicles to determine compliance with health and safety regulations and standards

Issues written citations to foremen or employees found to be in violation of health and safety standards

Implements approved safety policies and programs to assure optimum safety conditions

Confers with management and customers in the identification of training needs and recommends various training programs and procedures

Prepares, participates in, and/or conducts training classes in his or her assigned geographic region, obtaining the services of specialists when necessary

Selects or develops instructional aides such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multi-media visual aids, and/or reference works

Assists in the assessment of the job knowledge of employees and monitoring their progress in training initiatives

Ensures compliance with all contract and regulatory safety and training specifications and requirements

Maintains open communication with Vice President of Safety & Training on all job related issues and activities

Understands and enforces all company safety and training policies and procedures

Attends internal and external training courses which pertain to improving and developing job related skills

Attends departmental and other safety and training meetings

Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring to the Team

High School diploma or GED

Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Foreman on a tree trimming or herbicide application crew or two (2) years as a General Foreman managing herbicide crews and/or tree trimming crews and large multi-state projects

Possesses developmental and motivational skills

Must have strong communication skills

Must have basic operational knowledge including electronic mail, word processing and spreadsheets

Demonstrates a knowledge of applicable federal, state and local and health and safety laws, regulations and standards

Demonstrates a knowledge of electrical line clearing hazards and tree trimming and vegetation management operations

Demonstrates an ability to read and understand work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Demonstrates a knowledge of the proper methods of preparing training lessons and conducting training classes and the ability to conduct training classes is a wide variety of areas

Demonstrates an ability to communicate with others at all levels of the organization and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions

Demonstrates an ability to operate assigned equipment

Demonstrates an ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions

Demonstrates an ability and willingness to travel extensively. This will consist of overnight activities in accordance with corporate travel guidelines

Possession of a valid Driver's License with a company approved driving record

Possesses or obtains Certified Tree Worker Safety Professional (CTSP) designation within one year of hire date

Demonstrates an ability to work within an IBEW union/organized labor workforce

Must be able to meet all physical requirements of the position

Pass all drug and alcohol screens as required by Company policy and, if applicable, required by DOT regulations

Be at least 18 years of age, or 21 if CDL is required

Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred:

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
