The Assistant Professor/Director of Introduction to Lawyering will
have oversight of the innovative Introduction to Lawyering Program.
The Introduction to Lawyering course is a full-year six credit
course. The course covers legal writing, legal research, client
interviewing, client counseling, negotiation, oral argument, and
professionalism. The course is taught by legal practice professors
in a coordinated and collaborative manner under the leadership of
the Director. The Director reports to the Associate Dean for
Academics in this role.Duties and Responsibilities:The Director of
the Lawyering Program's primary responsibilities are:
--- Develop and evaluate the program's curriculum for the day and
weekend programs on an ongoing basis, including creating
assignments (with the assistance of professors teaching in the
program), simulations, teaching guides, class power points, video
and narrated presentations, and other materials. This also includes
collaborating with the Director of the Rodino Center concerning
research instruction.
--- Hire, train, mentor and supervise Lawyering professors,
including doing annual reviews with each individually.
--- Stay informed of trends in legal writing pedagogy and
scholarship, and provide intellectual leadership on the design of
the Introduction to Lawyering program.
--- Provide administrative oversight of all aspects of the program,
including responsibility for the hiring and use of actors for
exercises, creating master BlackBoard or Canvas pages and posting
appropriate course documents, developing the Lawyering calendar in
coordination with the Associate Dean and distributing it in a
timely manner, conducting regular Lawyering faculty meetings, and
overseeing the computation and submission of all Lawyering
grades.
--- Collaborate with Associate Deans, the Director of the Center
for Social Justice, The Director of Experiential Learning, and the
Director of the Rodino Center to ensure cohesive research, writing
and lawyering skills curriculum and to identify and utilize
synergies and overlap between the Lawyering program and the
upper-level skills curriculum.
--- Coordinate with the Director of LEO to develop and administer a
pre-law school modified Lawyering course that will run in early
August for LEO fellows entering the law school each fall.
--- Produce and administer an annual budget. Ensure proper
on-boarding of new faculty. Complete and submit proper paperwork
related to payment of actors and other vendors as needed. Oversee
and verify hours for a student research assistant.
--- Serve on Law School committees at the Associate Dean's request,
attend faculty meetings, programming and events including but not
limited to admissions events, the Road to Success, and
Orientation/Lawyering Day. Interact with the academic and alumni
community regarding issues relevant to the Lawyering
curriculum.
--- Complete special projects or work assigned by the Dean or
Associate Dean.
The Director of the Lawyering Program will also teach an
Introduction to Lawyering course. The Introduction to Lawyering
course is a full-year six credit course. The course covers legal
writing, legal research, client interviewing, client counseling,
negotiation, oral argument, and professionalism. The course is
taught by legal practice professors in a coordinated and
collaborative manner. The faculty member will be responsible for
the following:
--- Teaching twice a week during weeks when classes are scheduled
for the day program.
--- Responsible for assisting with the development of a writing
assignment and all supporting documents to be used during the
academic school year.
--- Meeting with students in individual and joint conferences to
discuss writing assignments and interactive skills exercises.
--- Providing students with detailed written feedback on writing
assignments and interactive skills exercises.
--- Attending Introduction to Lawyering faculty meetings to prepare
for upcoming classes and activities.
--- Teaching several sessions at the Introduction to Lawyering Day
at law school orientation.
--- Meeting with students outside of class time and conferences as
needed to discuss assignments and other law school topics.
--- Working with the Director of Lawyering and other Lawyering
faculty to create and revise the class exercises.
--- Other assignments consistent with the needs of the program.
This is a full-time position that requires presence at the Law
School on at least three days per week during the semester. Most
weeks the person in this position will be expected to come to the
law school to teach classes, meet with students and faculty, attend
faculty and committee meetings, and fulfill other responsibilities
and duties related to their leadership of the Lawyering
