Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Director of TRIO Programs, the
Assistant Director for the Upward Bound (UB) Program supports
oversight of Upward Bound initiatives while maintaining a
counseling caseload.
The Upward Bound Assistant Director, along with the TRIO Director
and Upward Bound Counselor is responsible for the effective
implementation and achievement of all goals, objectives and
standards associated with the Upward Bound Program as outlined by
the US Department of Education.
Saturday and off hour work is required. During the academic year
there are 26 to 28 sessions on Saturday that run from 8:30 am until
2:30pm. There is also an afterschool program that runs Monday
through Thursday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. There are also
Parent/Student Orientations and other activities that are typically
scheduled between 6:00 and 8:00pm. During the summer a six week
summer program is conducted, with four of these weeks being
residential. Staff are expected to be available on campus for
overnight supervision of students for the duration of the
residential program and should expect to work longer hours during
the day.
Essential Functions:
Essential functions of the Assistant Director for Upward Bound
include, but are not limited to, the following:
Providing leadership for various
programs and initiatives as assigned by the Director of TRIO
Programs. Assisting with program planning and conducting
evaluations.Assisting with hiring and supervising part-time and
temporary personnel who are involved with instructing, mentoring
and supervising students.Overseeing student participants enrolled
in the Upward Bound Program.Assisting with developing,
implementing, and assessing curriculum.Assisting with managing and
developing budgets for Upward Bound initiatives.Engaging in
grant-writing and other fundraising activities, to help sustain
programs and support students.Assisting with preparation of the
Upward Bound APR, as well as written/graphic reports on program
outcomes and effectiveness for review and discussion with CPCP
staff and other appropriate audiences.Assisting with establishing
partnerships with private, public, and community stakeholders in
college access for low income students and support for, Upward
Bound sponsored activities.At the direction of the TRIO Director,
Represent Upward Bound within the university and at local, state
and/or regional levels to help advance the vision and goals of
Upward Bound.Screen students for program eligibility, assess
student needs, and execute appropriate counseling services for
program participants.Saturday and off hour work is required.Must be
available to stay on campus overnight for one week (5 days) during
the course of the residential summer program component. Collect,
analyze and maintain student data, including report cards, test
scores, and Personal Educational Plans to improve service delivery
to students and increase students outcomes.Develop and maintain a
file on each eligible participant for use in education and career
planning. Supervise and conduct group counseling, individual
counseling and personal development activities. Organize and
conduct career workshops, seminars and other educational
activities. Must be willing to make off-site school visits on a
regular basis.Conduct entrance and exit interviews of program
participants.Assist the Program Director in program planning and
evaluation, reviewing applications for admission, financial aid,
assessing educational needs and goals of project
participants.Additional Functions:
Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
A Masters' degree is required, the
area of academic discipline should be Student Personnel Services,
Counseling, Education, Social Work or a related field. Must have
five or more years of experience in educational administration or
educational counseling at the high school or post-secondary
level.Must have strong project management skills, planning and
organizational skills, experience in conducting testing and
training activities and basic knowledge of the financial aid
process.Must be available to work on Saturdays during the fall and
spring semesters.Must be able to provide overnight supervision on
campus for the duration of the residential part of the summer
program (overnight duties will be split between appropriate staff),
all staff are on call 24 hours while the residential part of the
summer program is in session. Must have a valid Driver's License
and access to a vehicle.At the University's discretion, the
education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the
candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the university,
an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically
preparing the candidate for success in the position.Preferred
Qualifications:
The preferred candidate has
experience with STEM education, working with underrepresented and
underserved students. Knowledge of TRIO programs helpful.Bargaining
