The position is located in Newark, DE but the incumbent will need to travel to the Lewes, DE campus regularly.PAY GRADE: 31ECONTEXT OF THE JOB:The College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) has faculty, staff, students, and facilities in several locations including on the main campus in Newark, Del. and at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Delaware.The Newark campus houses CEOE research laboratories, offices, and classrooms supporting programs in marine policy, physical ocean science and engineering, geological sciences and geography. Robinson Hall also serves as the administrative base of the college with other college facilities in Penny Hall, Pearson Hall and DBI. The Lewes Campus includes the Sharp and Cannon buildings housing offices, classroom and lab spaces.Under the limited direction of the CEOE College Business Officer, the Manager is responsible for the daily administration and management of all academic/research space, facilities, equipment and instrumentation.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer all common space (laboratories, offices, and classrooms), facilities, equipment, and instrumentation; develop, prioritize and implement strategic planning specific to facilities and equipment within the college, including space assignment and renovations on both the Newark and Lewes campuses.
  • Serve as liaison between College and University (Facilities, Virden Center, Telephone & Network Services, Procurement/Asset Management, Public Safety, and Environmental Health & Safety) Offices, as well as numerous outside vendors and organizations.
  • Serve as direct liaison with UD Facilities Project Managers in the conduct of all approved office or lab renovations; provide regular updates to both faculty and CBO regarding progress and budgets.
  • Participate in planning and formulation of design alternatives and solutions for minor and major construction projects.
  • Coordinate effort and monitor progress of CEOE personnel, facilities personnel and/or outside contractors, to complete minor and major construction projects in a timely and effective manner to meet college, school, and departmental needs.
  • Supervise use and maintenance of all shared laboratory equipment and instrumentation; implement and coordinate preventative maintenance and annual recertification programs for select equipment (balances, centrifuges, pipettes, clean benches).
  • Serve as Safety Committee Vice-Chair; ensure compliance with various University safety reporting requirements, including lab inspections, annual Right -To-Know certification, preparation of Emergency Preparedness and Pandemic Planning documents, Department of Homeland Security Chemical Inventory, Workplace Chemical List; provide periodic safety training to students, interns and administrative staff; respond to safety incidents (accidents, chemical spills, personal injury), and follow-up on accident reporting.
  • Provide a general point-of-contact for faculty, student and staff concerns.
  • Serve on various standing and ad-hoc committees as assigned.
  • Conduct annual space and equipment inventories as required by UD Asset Management Office and periodic external audits.
  • Directly supervise part time College Facilities employee supporting the Lewes campus. -
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred, in a related field and five years directly responsible job-related experience.
    • Effective communication, supervisory and organizational skills.
    • Strong inter-personal, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to formulate strategic plans and make decisions in accordance with UD, College and SMSP policies and objectives.
    • Advanced knowledge of scientific instrumentation, equipment and systems.
    • General understanding of mechanical, electrical, and construction principles.
    • Capacity to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds (including administration, faculty, students, staff and the general public) and to foster a cooperative academic climate.
    • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
