Job Description:
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based
on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental
budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses,
specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the
University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of
possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), funded by
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, seeks to support undergraduate
students who are economically disadvantage and/or those who
identify with groups that have been historically underrepresented
in healthcare professions.Program participants are selected because
of promising achievement in college as well as a commitment to
pursue careers within the health professions. SHPEP is national
academic enrichment program offered at twelve medical center sites
across the country.
At Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the program offers
career exposure in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Physical
Therapy to eligible students for free. Throughout the duration of
the six-week program, students are afforded intensive and
personalized health professions school preparation. The support
provided for participating students help them to become more
competitive applicants to health professions schools. Each year,
SHPEP serves 80 scholars who will be rising college sophomores and
juniors at the time of program participation.
A major component of the programs is centered on academic
enrichment with a focus on improving of scholars' performance in
pre-health science courses. Supplemental courses are also offered
to help scholars strengthen their learning and study skills.
Alongside their coursework, scholars participate in practical
experiences and career exposure seminars.
SHPEP Program Facilitators will assist with managing pre-health
science courses and general program execution for all program
scholars. Participating scholars are undergraduate students (rising
sophomores and Juniors at the time of the program) from diverse
backgrounds who generally have varying skillsets and require
guidance for education advancement and career exploration. Ideal
candidates for the SHPEP Program Facilitator positions are those
interested in working with students who fit the demographics
previously described. This is a great opportunity to assist with
exercising curriculum construction, providing course instruction,
and establishing differentiation skills.
Responsibilities
SHPEP Program Facilitators will be responsible for assisting with
the supervision, guidance and education of college students
enrolled in the summer program. Specific responsibilities will
require that Program Facilitators:
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
Full-time CUIMC students with education and training in science
and/or mathematics.
Demonstration of leadership and organization skills.
Previous teaching experience is extremely helpful, but not
necessary.
